The College of Education for Pure Sciences Organizes a Scientific Workshop on Environmentally Friendly Laboratory Practices.

The Department of Biology at the College of Education for Pure Sciences organized a scientific workshop entitled “Environmentally Friendly Laboratory Practices in Biology Research.”

The workshop was presented by: Prof. Dr. Israa Nasser Ghulam, Asst. Prof. Dr. Sarab Fadhil Hassan, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Hanan Zweir Mukhlif.

This workshop aimed to highlight the importance of applying sustainability principles within academic and research laboratories to reduce environmental impacts and minimize waste. It explained the concept of a green laboratory and its objectives in conserving materials and energy. The workshop also reviewed sound methods for managing chemicals and handling biological waste according to safe and sustainable procedures.

The workshop covered several topics, including mechanisms for saving energy through the optimal use of scientific equipment and conducting regular maintenance. It also presented water-saving practices such as adopting closed systems for washing and calibration processes. The workshop also presented the latest technologies and highly efficient tools that support laboratory sustainability, showcasing practical examples that can be implemented in life sciences laboratories. These included reducing plastic use in PCR experiments and replacing toxic materials with safe, recyclable, or sterilizable alternatives.

The researchers recommended focusing on such topics to provide participants with a practical plan for transforming laboratories into sustainable, green facilities and to cultivate a responsible research culture that contributes to a safer and more efficient scientific environment.
