The Department of Biology Holds a Seminar for a Master’s Student on the Detection and Isolation of Pathogenic Parasites in the American Cockroach in Homes and Hospitals in Diwaniyah

Master’s Thesis Seminar Discussion

As part of the series of scientific activities organized by the Department of Biology, a seminar was held for graduate student Zahraa Ali Obaid, under the supervision of Prof. Ashwaq Kazim Obaid, entitled “Detection and Isolation of Pathogenic Parasites in the American Cockroach in Homes and Hospitals in Diwaniyah.”
This seminar aimed to study the role of the American cockroach in transmitting pathogenic parasites and to identify the species prevalent in human-associated environments. Cockroaches play an important role in transmitting parasites and are a health risk, especially in environments with poor hygiene.
The study also included collecting 500 cockroach samples (250 from homes and 250 from hospitals). The results showed that 93.6% of the samples were infected with parasites, and the highest percentage of infection was internal (92.4%) compared to superficial (1.2%).
