From Education to Impact… Universities Lead the Way in Sustainable Development… A Scientific Lecture at the Second Sustainability Conference…
As part of the Second Scientific Conference on Sustainable Development, Dr. Talib Hashim Matloub delivered a scientific lecture entitled “From Education to Impact: How Universities Create Sustainable Development.” In his lecture, he addressed the historical roots of the concept of sustainability and its importance in building a balanced environmental and economic future.
During his lecture, he explained that sustainability is not a modern term, but rather a practical reality that began with the first resource crises. Between 1650 and 1750, the first forest management policies emerged in Europe following widespread depletion of timber, based on the fundamental principle of not consuming more than can be replenished. He also pointed out that the Industrial Revolution between 1760 and 1840 contributed to increased industrial production, but it was accompanied by increased pollution and fossil fuel consumption, leading to a gap between economic growth and environmental limits. Dr. Talib Hashim explained that universities represent the true starting point for promoting sustainability, given their ability to integrate education, scientific research, and practical application within a comprehensive knowledge environment.
This lecture is part of the conference’s efforts to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable development and the role of academic institutions in achieving it in a way that serves society and addresses contemporary global challenges.
