The College of Education for Pure Sciences Organizes a Scientific Workshop on Drug Addiction: Its Effects, Risks, and Methods of Combating it in Iraq.
The Department of Biology at the College of Education for Pure Sciences organized a scientific workshop entitled “Drug Addiction: Effects, Risks, and Methods of Combating It in Iraq.”
The workshop was presented by:
Asst. Prof. Dr. Ban Abdul Hussein
Dr. Hamed Jawad Kadhim
This workshop aimed to introduce the concept of drug addiction, which is considered one of the most serious challenges facing modern societies, as it threatens public health and social and economic stability in Iraq.
The workshop covered several topics related to the reality of drug use and addiction in Iraq, including a study of the prevalence of the phenomenon and the factors contributing to its increase in recent years. It also addressed identifying the groups most vulnerable to drug use (youth, the unemployed, and marginalized groups) and examining the most commonly used substances: crystal meth, hashish, psychotropic substances, and prescription drugs.
The researchers recommended focusing on such topics to raise awareness of their dangers and methods of prevention by strengthening awareness programs in schools and universities about the risks of drugs using modern and interactive methods. They also recommended increasing the number of addiction treatment centers and equipping them with qualified staff specializing in psychological and behavioral therapy, as well as tightening controls at border crossings to prevent the entry of narcotics and dismantle smuggling networks.
