Lecturer (Mr. Hussein Ali Ahmad) from the Department of Chemistry received his PhD for his thesis entitled: “Synthesis and Characterization of Heterocyclic Compounds of 5-Bromoindole-2-Carboxylic Acid and Study of Their Biological Activity, Such as Antibacterial Activity”
The study aimed to synthesize and biologically evaluate a new series of indole-linked 1,3,4-oxadiazoles (ILOXs). The synthesis of ILOXs began with the preparation of indole-containing hydrazines, which were subsequently reacted with heterocyclic aromatic aldehydes to produce indole-containing hydrazides-hydrazones.
The study concluded that the final compounds were produced by heating in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in the presence of molecular iodine and potassium carbonate. The structures of the synthesized ILOXs were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, in addition to NMR spectroscopy of 1H and 1C protons.
