The College of Education for Pure Sciences discusses a master’s thesis on a taxonomic and chemical study of two species of the genus Veronica from the family Plantaginaceae.

The Department of Life Sciences at the College of Education for Pure Sciences at the University of Karbala discussed a master’s thesis entitled “A Taxonomic and Chemical Study of Two Species of the Genus Veronica from the Family Plantaginaceae” by student Jihan Hussein Mirza. Supervised by Professor Dr. Nibal Amtir Trad.

The study aimed to identify and compare the two plant species: Kickxia elatine and Veronica agrestis.

The study concluded that variations in the fine morphological characteristics of the surfaces of the vegetative parts and some floral parts were useful in isolating and identifying the two species. Furthermore, the characteristics of the surface coating of the vegetative parts and some floral parts are of taxonomic importance in identifying and distinguishing between the two species.

The study recommended the necessity of studying the two species in the field of morphological and anatomical studies using light microscopy, in addition to the penetrating microscope, to search for new taxonomic evidence supporting the fine characteristics of the species. A detailed study of pollen grains, as they are an important taxonomic tool.

The student received an excellent grade.
