The Department of Chemistry Organizes a Scientific Symposium on the Applications of Natural Polymers
Scientific Symposium
The Department of Chemistry at the College of Education for Pure Sciences organized a scientific symposium entitled (Applications of Natural Polymers) which was delivered by: (Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nazem Bahgat) and (Asst. Lect. Zahraa Mushtaq Abdul-Aima). It was attended by lecturers, researchers and a group of people interested in this topic. This symposium aimed to identify the concept of polymers as well as their classification based on several principles used, where the sources of these polymers are either natural, industrial, or natural modified. For plants and animals, this symposium also aimed at how to obtain modified natural polymers by making some modifications to natural polymers, either by changing their chemical composition such as introducing new groups into the polymer, or changing the composition of some active groups present in it, or by grafting a natural polymer onto an industrial polymer and vice versa. The operations that I dealt with on modified natural polymers are the process of vulcanization of rubber, where a process of hardening of natural rubber was carried out using sulfur. chemical. The symposium included several topics: The first axis is to identify the concept of polymers and their classification. The second axis dealt with the subject of natural polymers and their classification as well as their applications. The third axis dealt with how to manufacture modified natural polymers. The researchers called for attention to such topics because they (polymers) play a fundamental and total role in the uses of daily life, due to their unique properties and also because of the benefits of polymers in various fields. They are essential materials in everyday industrial sectors, such as adhesives, building materials, paper, apparel, fibres, plastics, ceramics, concrete, liquid crystals and photoresist. We wish more creativity and progress in the field of scientific activities aimed at serving our dear college, and God Almighty grant success.
