The College of Education for Pure Sciences organizes a scientific seminar on cyber extortion
The Chemistry Department at the College of Education for Pure Sciences organized a scientific seminar entitled “Cyber Extortion.”
The seminar was presented by: Lecturer Hamed Jawad Kadhim Assistant Lecturer Nasreen Alaa El-Din Hashem
This seminar aimed to explain the concept of cyber extortion as a modern crime that has emerged from technological advancements and the widespread use of digital communication tools. It involves a perpetrator threatening a victim with the publication of private information, photos, videos, or personal data via the internet or social media, with the intent of forcing them to perform or refrain from performing a specific action. This is often done in exchange for money, a benefit, or to achieve illicit goals.
The seminar covered several topics, including the concept of cyber extortion, its types, definition, and various forms it takes on social media platforms and digital applications. It also addressed the reasons for the spread of cyber extortion, such as a lack of digital awareness, unsafe internet use, excessive trust in others, and the absence of family and community oversight.
The researchers recommended focusing on such topics to enhance digital awareness among students and the community regarding the dangers of online extortion and methods of prevention. They also encouraged the immediate reporting of extortion cases and urged students not to give in to extortionists. Furthermore, they recommended integrating cybersecurity into educational activities and guidance programs in colleges.
