The College of Education for Pure Sciences Organizes a Scientific Seminar on Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.
Under the banner of the Iraqi Cultural Week for Combating Drugs, the College of Education for Pure Sciences organized a scientific seminar on drugs and psychotropic substances.
The seminar was presented by Prof. Waleed Kadhim Jassim Al-Kaabi (Director of Public Relations and Media for the Directorate of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Affairs in Kerbala).
This seminar aimed to define drugs as chemical substances that affect the central nervous system, altering brain function and causing disturbances in thinking, behavior, and mood. Drugs may be classified as natural, synthetic, or compound. The seminar also explained the reasons that drive individuals to use drugs.
The seminar covered several topics, including the types of drugs according to their effects on the nervous system: depressants such as heroin, sedatives, and alcohol; stimulants such as cocaine and amphetamines; and alterers of consciousness such as hashish and hallucinogens. It also explained drugs based on their source, such as natural substances like opium and cannabis. Semi-synthetic drugs include heroin and morphine, while synthetic drugs include crystal meth, tramadol, and LSD.
The researcher recommended focusing on such topics to develop drug prevention strategies by raising awareness about all forms of drugs and their harmful effects. This includes strengthening family oversight and open communication within the family, fostering strong character in children that promotes self-confidence, encouraging sports and hobbies, and steering them away from negative peer influence.
