Master’s Student Seminar Discussion
As part of the series of scientific activities organized by the Department of biology, a seminar was discussed by Master’s student Ban Asaad Muhammad Hassan, under the supervision of Prof. Ashwaq Kazim Obaid, entitled “Laboratory and Molecular Diagnosis of Toxoplasma gondii Infection: A Comparison of Traditional and Modern Methods
This seminar aimed to provide an in-depth study of Toxoplasma gondii infection, the parasite that causes toxoplasmosis, one of the most widespread parasitic diseases in the world. The importance of this disease stems from the fact that it often goes without symptoms in healthy individuals, but it poses a significant risk to pregnant women and immunocompromised patients, as it can lead to congenital malformations or fatal encephalitis
The study also addressed the complex diagnostic challenges facing physicians, especially in latent or chronic cases, and the difficulty of distinguishing between recent and past infections using traditional methods, which can produce inaccurate results and delay treatment. The results are presented through a comprehensive comparison between traditional methods (such as microscopy and serological tests) and modern molecular methods (such as PCR and RT-PCR) in terms of sensitivity, accuracy, and ease of application. The advantages and limitations of each technique are presented, with a focus on clinical applications, particularly in cases of pregnancy and immunodeficiency. We wish the student continued success and excellence as she continues her academic journey
