The Department of Life Sciences at the College of Education for Pure Sciences organized a scientific lecture on marriage and divorce in Iraqi law: rights and duties. The lecture was presented by Asst. Dr. Jihan Haider Khalil. The lecture aimed to define the concepts of marriage and divorce, which are among the most important issues regulated by Iraqi Personal Status Law No. 188 of 1959, taking into account the differences between Islamic sects and other denominations. The lecture also included several topics on the basic conditions of marriage. Marriage must be with the consent of both parties, with the dowry (bridegiver) specified. The minimum age for marriage is 18, and marriage at 15 is permitted with the approval of a judge. Divorce, such as revocable divorce, allows a husband to take his wife back during the waiting period without the need for a new contract. There are also irrevocable divorce and judicial divorce. The researcher recommended the need to pay attention to such topics in order to understand the challenges and proposed reforms regarding marriage and divorce, as Iraqi law faces challenges such as high divorce rates and the difficulty of proving customary marriage.
