The Student Activities Unit at the College of Education for Pure Sciences organized a scientific lecture on social stigma. The lecturer (Asst. Professor Dr. Hamid Shahab Al-Masoudi) from the College of Education for Human Sciences at the University of Kerbala gave the lecture.
This lecture aimed to understand the concept of stigma theory and how individuals’ behavior and self-identity are affected and determined by the vocabulary used to describe and classify them. Stigma theory is linked to the concepts of self-fulfilling prophecy and social stereotypes.
The lecture also included several axes about the fact that deviation is not inherent, and focuses on those who deviate from the normative cultural rules in a negative way. And how this theory was prominent in the sixties and seventies of the last century, and some modified models of it were developed and are still popular until now. The researcher recommended the need to pay attention to such topics because social stigma is a very negative stigma that changes the individual’s self-concept and social identity and changes the structure of society and can create barriers for people who suffer from a mental or behavioral disorder.
