Department of Biology Organizes a Scientific Workshop on how to Get Rid of Algae in Water Tanks

Workshop

The Department of biology at the College of Education for Pure Sciences organized a scientific workshop on (How to get rid of algae in water tanks), delivered by: (Asst. Lect.  Muhammad Talib Badr) and (Asst. Lect Sari Fadel Hassan).
The workshop aimed to determine the percentage of algae present in water tanks, diagnose it laboratory-wise, and determine the damage caused by it. How to dispose of them using a sterilization method, including sterilization with ultraviolet rays, in addition to sterilization with diluted chlorine, and continuous cleaning of tanks.
The workshop also included addressing the dangers of algal toxins as secondary metabolites secreted by algae and the harmful effects of these toxins on some living organisms, including humans, as these toxins directly affect the nervous system as well as some other organs such as the liver, skin, etc.
Researchers have called for attention to such topics in order to know some of the benefits of algae and their important roles in the environment, such as their use as fertilizer for some plants because they decompose large amounts of nitrogen, and they are also used as animal feed because they contain a high percentage of proteins. In addition to its negative impact on water tanks and the need to pay attention to cleaning the tanks periodically (at least twice a year) to ensure that sediments do not accumulate, including microorganisms and algae that cause some diseases.
