The University of Karbala achieved eighth place locally in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings among 1,183 universities around the world from 85 foreign and Arab countries.
The classification included basic standards for university infrastructure, energy, addressing climate change, water, waste treatment, and transportation, as well as scientific research related to sustainability.
The Director of Scientific Affairs at the university, Dr. Fadel Nour El-Din, said, “The classification evaluates universities in terms of applying environmental sustainability standards. It was launched in 2010 and includes 6 basic standards and 39 sub-indicators.”
Noting that “74 Iraqi universities participated in this classification, and the University of Karbala achieved eighth place after the University of Babylon, Anbar, Al-Mustaqbal, Baghdad, the Middle Euphrates, Basra, and Al-Mustansiriya.”
Dr. Nour El-Din explained, “This achievement was achieved through the great efforts exerted by the university’s presidency in recent years to develop infrastructure, especially in the field of increasing green spaces, planting trees and extending water canals around the university campus, as well as creating a number of lakes, in addition to moving towards energy.” renewable energy, reducing consumption and other measures.”
