The Department of Biology discusses a doctoral thesis on an anatomical comparative study of some parts of the digestive system in Iraqi domestic ducks in central and southern Iraq.
The Department of biology at the College of Education for Pure Sciences at the University of Karbala discussed a doctoral thesis entitled (An anatomical comparative study of some parts of the digestive system in the Iraqi domestic duck Anas platyrhynchos in central and southern Iraq), by the student (Muhammad Salim Muhammad Al-Har), under the supervision of (Professor Dr. Muhammad) Wissam Al-Muhanna) as first supervisor and (Prof. Dr. Abdel Samad Aliwi Hassan) as second supervisor. The aim of the thesis was to use in this study the Khudairi bird, Anas platyrhynchos, from the governorates of Basra and Holy Karbala, for a number of studies: Anatomical: It included the phenotypic and anatomical description of the mouth, esophagus, and stomach, with its two sections (the anterior (glandular) and bony) the gizzard (and the small intestine). , the large intestine, the complex, and its accessory glands in the digestive system (the liver and pancreas). The study concluded that: The digestive canal is an open-ended tube that begins with the mouth and ends with the opening of the collector. The digestive canal in Al-Khudairi lacks the presence of the gizzard. The stomach consists of two parts, a tubular glandular anterior stomach, and a muscular gizzard stomach in the shape of a two-sided convex lens lined with a layer of coelom to protect it from corrosion. It has thick layers of muscle that help it grind food. The intestine, the longest part of the digestive canal, consists of the duodenum in the shape of the letter U. The pancreas is located between its arms, and the jejunum and ileum are similar in structure, arranged in large globules in the shape of the letter U. The digestive canal in both the gizzard and the small intestine is composed of four layers: the tunica mucosa, the tunica submucosae, the tunica osseous, and the tunica serous. The small intestine is characterized by the presence of villi. The study recommended: conducting comparative studies of the components of the digestive system among several species of birds in different environments, including northern Iraq. Conducting a study to measure amino acids, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids in the gizzard and intestines of other types of birds in the Iraqi environment, and conducting a comparative study to determine the relationship between the chemical content of the skeletal and digestive systems and their nutritional value for aquatic birds. The student received an excellent grade.
