The Department of Life Sciences Discusses a Ph.D. Thesis on Studying the Effect of Alcoholic and Nano-Extracts of Artichoke Seeds

PhD Dissertation Discussion

The Department of Life Sciences at the College of Education for Pure Sciences at the University of Karbala discussed a doctoral dissertation on (a study of the effect of alcoholic and nano-extracts of the seeds of the artichoke plant on some physiological, genetic and histological parameters in male white rats induced by liver cancer) by the student (Karrar Hussein Hunait Al-Kuraiti), and under the supervision of (Asst. Prof. Yasmine Khudair Khalaf), (Prof. Rasha Abdul Amir Jawad).
The thesis aimed to know the protective role of extracts of the seeds of the herb plant in its alcoholic and nano forms in the treatment of liver cancer, and to know the effects of the extract in its nano and alcoholic forms on some physiological parameters, genetic material and liver tissue.
The thesis showed that the induction of liver cancer caused an increase in the breakdown of DNA, changes in the level of liver enzymes, blood proteins, and antioxidants, as well as changes in liver tissue.
The thesis also recommended studying the effect of milk thistle extracts in the treatment of skin diseases, studying a number of genes that have a role in programmed death processes, studying different parts of the plant and knowing the active compounds present in them, with a chapter on silymarin, which is the main active substance in the plant. The student obtained an excellent grade.
