The Department of Biology Discusses a Master’s Thesis on a Comparative Study of the Aqueous and Alcoholic Extract of Cloves with Plant Growth Regulators Against Some Toxin-Producing Fungi
The Department of biology discussed the Master’s thesis for student (Mona Jaber Nehme) under the supervision of (Prof. Dr. Ban Musa Hassan Al-Zubaidi) for her tagged thesis entitled (A comparative study of the aqueous and alcoholic extract of cloves with plant growth regulators against some toxin-producing fungi). This study aimed to isolate and diagnose mycotoxin-producing fungi from foodstuffs in the Karbala governorate. The study was conducted in the laboratories of the College of Education for Pure Sciences for the academic year 2021-2022 to evaluate the effectiveness of water and alcohol extracts of cloves and study the effect of some plant growth regulators Gibberellic acid and Indol acetic acid.
* The most important conclusions:
1- The results of the study showed the presence of a high percentage of contamination with aflatoxin-producing fungi in the food products that were collected. 2- The emergence of different types of toxin-producing fungi in foodstuffs (local and imported). 3- Molecular diagnosis of fungi isolated from foodstuffs showed that there is an agreement of 99-100% with global fungal isolates. 4- Efficiency of the alcoholic extract of cloves in inhibiting fungi with low concentrations. 5- The ability of both IAA and GA3 growth regulators to inhibit the aflatoxin-producing fungi. 6- The combination of an alcoholic extract with plant growth regulators proved highly effective in inhibiting aflatoxin-producing fungi.
After extensive scientific discussion and listening to the student’s defense of her thesis, her research method, and her use of sources and references, the thesis was approved with honors. Congratulations to the student, her supervisor, the College of Education for Pure Sciences, and the University of Karbala for this achievement, and God Almighty grants success and payment.
