The Department of Chemistry Discusses a Master’s Thesis on Studying the Optical and Structural Properties Of Nano-sized Semiconductor Particles

Discussion of a Master’s Thesis

The Department of Chemistry at the College of Education for Pure Sciences discussed the master’s thesis for the student (Zeinab Taleb Turki Jassim), under the supervision of (Prof. Dr. Ola Mahdi Abd Ali) and the second supervisor (Prof. Nagham Mahy Kazem) for her thesis entitled ( Studying the Optical and Structural Properties Of Nano-sized Semiconductor Particles). The goal of the message was:
1- Preparation of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles using chemical precipitation and green method.
2- Studying the effect of adding polyethylene glycol on the prepared cadmium sulfide particles.
3- Studying the optimum conditions (reaction temperature, reaction time, extract concentration, solution PH)
4- Study of the linear optical properties of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles prepared by the two methods.
As for the main conclusions:
1- Cadmium sulfide nanoparticles were successfully prepared by chemical precipitation and green methods.
2- Cadmium sulfide nanoparticles were prepared for the first time using avocado extract and polyethylene glycol.
3- The energy gap of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles increased from 2.66 electron volts to 3.25 electron volts and 4.44 electron volts in the presence of both the extract and polyethylene glycol.
4- The average crystal size decreases from 3.2 nm to 2.5 nm in the presence of the extract and 2.1 nm in the presence of the polymer.
5- We found that both polyethylene glycol and the extract had an effect on the formation of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles, whereby the size of the cadmium sulfide material could be changed and its optical properties could be controlled.
After extensive scientific discussion and listening to the student’s defense of her thesis, the method of her research, and her use of sources and references, the thesis was approved with honors. Congratulations to the student, her supervisor, the Department of Chemistry, and the College of Education for Pure Sciences for this great achievement, and God Almighty grants success.
