PhD Dissertation Discussion
The Department of biology/ College of Education for Pure Sciences/University of Karbala, discussed a doctoral thesis entitled (Study of the preventive and therapeutic effect of the alcoholic extract of the plant Cyperus esculentus on some biochemical and histological parameters of kidney rats experimentally affected by renal failure), by the student Shatha Hussein Kazem Al-Obaidi, and under the supervision of Dr. Rasha Abdel the prince.
The dissertation aimed to know the preventive and curative role of the alcoholic extract of the plant Cyperus esculentus in the treatment of renal failure, by studying the examination of indicators of kidney efficiency, which are: (creatinine level, urea level, gelatinase neutrophils, albumin level, glomerular filtration rate and uric acid), and the measurement of antigens Oxidative stress (catelase enzyme, glutathione, glutathione peroxidase), and histological study of the kidneys before and after kidney failure and when treated with the phenolic extract of the love plant.
The dissertation showed that neutrophils gelatinase as good biomarkers for predicting gentamicin-induced renal failure early instead of the common indicators (urea and creatinine). Induction of chronic renal failure by gentamicin in male rats led to a decrease in the level of glomerular filtration rate, and an increase in urea, creatinine, albumin, and lipocalin-related gelatinase neutrophils. Whereas, treatment with the phenolic extract of the cherry plant led to an increase in the glomerular filtration rate, a decrease in the level of urea, creatinine, and albumin. The induction of chronic renal failure by gentamicin in male rats led to a significant decrease in the values of antioxidants such as glutathione, catalase enzyme and glutathione peroxidase, while Treatment with the phenolic extract of the love plant, to return the levels of these antibiotics to their normal state in the body.
The student recommended a comparative study of the effect of water and alcohol extracts of the cherry plant on some functional and biochemical blood parameters in laboratory animals induced by renal failure, and studying the effect of water and alcohol extracts of the cherry plant on some antioxidants such as melatonin and on some body systems such as the respiratory and digestive systems and on some hormones Thyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands, and Fraction isolation of the main active compounds in each of the two extracts to find out the most effective group in affecting kidney failure disease. The student received an excellence grade.
