The Department of Chemistry at the College of Education for Pure Sciences/University of Karbala discussed a Master’s Thesis entitled (Studying the effect of kidney diseases on thyroid hormones), for the student (Wael Ali Muhammad Hassan), and under the supervision of: Prof. Rehab Jassim Muhammad (First Supervisor) And Prof. Dr. Riyad Dahoud Al-Zubaidi/Dean of the College of Medicine/University of Karbala (Second Supervisor), on Wednesday, 8-9-2021, and the aim of the thesis was to identify the imbalance in the function of the thyroid gland and its relationship to biochemical changes in patients with various kidney diseases, and to evaluate Thyroid hormones T3, T4, TSH, blood urea and serum creatinine levels as markers of renal function, and finding a correlation between kidney disease and thyroid hormone disorder. The study concluded: It is possible that a basic disorder of the thyroid gland may occur because kidney diseases and these disorders may cause difficulty and errors in their interpretation. Our data shows that chronic kidney disease leads to a significant decrease in the levels of thyroid hormone T3 and T4 and an increase in TSH, which increases the risk of kidney disease, Finding a relationship between kidney disease and thyroid disorder over time.
The discussion came out with several recommendations, including: follow-up of patients with hypothyroidism and renal failure to assess the progress of hypothyroidism, thyroid function should be evaluated in patients with deterioration in kidney function, a study of kidney function in hyperthyroidism and compared with hypothyroidism. The student received an honors grade.
