The College of Education for Pure Sciences Discusses a Master’s Thesis Entitled (The Effect of Raw Extracts of Marjoram on the Growth of Some Cancerous and Normal Cell Lines outside the Body)

Discussion of a Master’s Thesis

The Department of biology, College of Education for Pure Sciences, University of Karbala, discussed the master’s thesis entitled (The effect of raw extracts of marjoram plant on the growth of some cancerous and normal cell lines outside the body), for the student (Ali Shahid Abdel Hamza), and under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Liqaa Hassoun Sakban, and the study aimed to conduct A preliminary examination to identify the active substances present in the aqueous and alcoholic extracts of the leaves of the Origanum Majorana plant. And exploring the effectiveness of aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Origanum Majorana leaves in inhibiting the growth and spread of some cancer cells outside the body, which included the human breast cancer line (AMJ13 and the esophageal cancer line (SK-GT-4), and the toxicity test of water and alcohol extracts of Origanum Majorana leaves on the natural line (HBL-100) whether it is safe on normal cells ex vivo, and comparing the effect of aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Origanum Majorana leaves on cancer cell lines on the one hand and the natural line on the other hand.
The thesis concluded that, possessing aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Origanum Majorana leaves on many active substances, which had a clear toxic effect on cancer cells, the possession of water and alcoholic extracts of Origanum Majorana leaves had cytotoxicity against AMJ13 human breast cancer cells and against esophageal adenocarcinoma cells. SK-GT-4 had little effect against HBL-100 normal epithelial cells ex vivo, the cells of the human breast cancer cell line AMJ13 were more sensitive and effect to the aqueous and alcohol extract compared with the cells of the human esophageal cancer cell line SK-GT-4 and the cells of the normal line HBL-100 , The alcoholic extracts were more effective and toxic against cancer cells than the aqueous extracts, the aqueous extracts were less toxic and safer against normal cells.
The discussion came out with several recommendations, including: a study to determine the genetic, enzymatic and histological toxicological effects of Origanum Majorana leaves inside the body, a study of the effect of water and alcoholic extracts of Origanum Majorana leaves on immune cells inside and outside the living body, a study of the effect of water and alcohol extracts of leaves of the plant Marjoram Origanum Majorana against new natural and cancerous cell lines, isolating and purifying the most important active compounds found in the plant and showing their effect in inhibiting the growth of human cancer cells, conducting a comparative study between treating cancer with natural materials and chemotherapy, benefits and harms, conducting the same study on other plants related to the treatment of Or reduce the symptoms of cancer. The student received an honors grade.
