Master thesis discussion
The Department of Biology Sciences, College of Education for Pure Sciences, discussed a master’s thesis entitled (Anatomical study to demonstrate the protective role of the aqueous extract of the Saad plant in some hematological, biochemical and histological parameters in rats induced by sodium benzoate) for the student (Ruqaya Abbas Jadoua) and under the supervision of Assist.Prof.Dr. Naseer Mirza Hamza, and the aim of the study was to test the effectiveness of the Saad plant extract of leaves and roots as a preventive material in reducing the side effects of the toxic substance, which is sodium benzoate, and the study concluded that treatment with sodium benzoate resulted in a significant decrease in the weights of animals.
The treatment with sodium benzoate led to the occurrence of tissue changes in the kidney and liver such as central vein congestion, necrosis of cells and glomerular atrophy. The treatment with sodium benzoate also led to changes in the biochemical parameters, which included liver enzymes (ALT, ALP, AST), total protein, albumin, and kidney standards. (Creatinine, blood urea) and oxidation parameters catalase and glutathione. The treatment with sodium benzoate resulted in a significant increase in the concentrations of enzymes related to the kidney and liver and a significant decrease in the level of antioxidants. The aqueous extract of the roots and leaves of the Saad plant separately showed a protective effect against the toxic effects of the treatment. With sodium benzoate in biochemical and tissue parameters (kidney and liver). The discussion resulted in recommendations, including:
We recommend reducing the consumption of substances containing sodium benzoate as a preservative due to its harmful toxic effects on human health, using another preservative that is safer on human health than sodium benzoate, and studying the active compounds in the leaves of the Saad plant because of its importance equal to the importance of the roots. The use of the Saad plant as a therapeutic substance because of its many benefits in treating many diseases such as infections. Conducting a study to find out the cumulative effect of sodium benzoate on children as they are more susceptible to these preservatives, and the student obtained an appreciation of excellence.
