In conjunction with the Cultural Dates Festival, the College of Education for Pure Sciences organized a workshop entitled “Date Palm Cultivation in Afforestation and Sustainable Agriculture Projects.” The workshop was presented by Dr. Ban Abdul Hussein Mohammed and attended by Engineer Razzaq Ali Radam, Head of the Agricultural Authority of the General Secretariat of the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussein.

The workshop focused on the importance of afforestation in maintaining ecological balance and increasing green spaces through the planting of date palm seedlings and ornamental plants. It also highlighted the significance of Iraqi dates as an important agricultural and economic product that contributes to supporting the local economy and enhancing food security.

The workshop concluded with the honoring of participants through the distribution of certificates of appreciation to the engineers and supervisors of agricultural projects affiliated with the General Secretariat of the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussein, in recognition of their contributions and efforts in supporting afforestation and sustainable agriculture projects.

The Department of Biology at the College of Education for Pure Sciences organized a training course entitled “Steps for Diagnosing Histological Sections in Scientific Research.”

This course aimed to develop the participants’ skills in the field of histological diagnosis by highlighting the precise scientific methodology for reading and analyzing histological sections and linking cellular and inflammatory changes to the pathological context. This contributes to raising the academic level and enhancing the quality of scientific research.

The course covered several topics, including an introduction to the fundamentals of histology and its importance in scientific research; the steps for preparing histological sections and methods for handling them in the laboratory; the scientific methodology for reading and diagnosing histological sections; and the diagnosis of cellular and inflammatory changes and their correlation with pathological conditions.

The researchers emphasized the importance of focusing on such topics to emphasize the significance of continuous practical training in the field of histological diagnosis. Encouraging researchers and graduate students to adopt a rigorous scientific methodology in reading tissue sections. Strengthening collaboration between relevant laboratories and scientific departments.

The Department of Mathematics at the College of Education for Pure Sciences organized a scientific workshop entitled “The Role of Equality in Reducing the Wage Gap.”

This workshop aimed to highlight one of the most prominent issues related to social justice in the workplace.

The workshop aimed to raise awareness of the importance of gender pay equality by explaining the main causes of the wage gap and its social and economic effects on individuals and society.

The workshop covered several topics, including the concept of wage equality and its importance in achieving social justice; the causes of the gender wage gap in the labor market; the economic and social effects of the wage gap on individuals and society; and the legal and legislative frameworks that support the principle of wage equality.

The researchers recommended the necessity of focusing on such topics to promote the implementation of laws and legislation that guarantee equal pay without discrimination and to adopt transparent wage policies within governmental and private institutions. It also supports awareness and training programs on workplace justice and equal opportunities, as well as encouraging women’s participation in decision-making and senior management positions.

The Chemistry Department at the College of Education for Pure Sciences organized a training course entitled “Safe Handling of Chemicals in Laboratories.”

This course aimed to familiarize participants with safe handling procedures for chemicals in laboratories, raising awareness among participants and promoting a culture of occupational safety within the laboratory work environment. It also aimed to provide participants with the fundamentals of chemical safety and proper methods for storing and transporting materials.

The course covered several topics, including the classification of chemicals and their properties, identifying different types of chemicals (flammable, toxic, corrosive, oxidizing, etc.), organizing the workspace, ensuring proper ventilation and cleanliness of the laboratory, and the correct and safe storage of chemicals.

The researchers emphasized the importance of focusing on such topics to emphasize the necessity of adhering to all safety instructions within the laboratory and the importance of consistently wearing personal protective equipment. They also recommended providing a laboratory safety manual. Updated and distributed to all students and researchers. Ongoing training for staff and students on emergency procedures and the proper use of firefighting equipment. Strict oversight of the storage and transport of hazardous chemicals in accordance with standard specifications.

The Dean of the College of Education for Pure Sciences, Professor Dr. Hamida Aidan Salman, welcomed the first-year evening students for the 2025-2026 academic year in a warm, supportive, and encouraging academic atmosphere.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Dean welcomed the new students, congratulating them on their acceptance to the college and their joining its academic community. She emphasized that the college strives to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that enables them to excel and innovate.

The meeting included an introductory presentation on the functions of the academic departments and the study system, in addition to clarifying the university regulations and instructions related to attendance and conduct.

She also outlined a set of important guidelines for the students, including the importance of attending classes regularly and respecting university regulations and instructions.

At the end of the meeting, the Dean expressed her wishes to all students for an academic year full of success and achievement, calling on them to be diligent and hardworking in a way that reflects the honorable image of the students of the University of Karbala.

Professor Hiyam Abdul-Ridha Karim participated as a member of the master’s thesis defense committee for student Kawthar Basem Badr from the College of Medicine at the University of Karbala.

Professor Rasha Abdul-Amir Jawad chaired the master’s thesis defense committee for student Adhraa Zain Al-Abidin Musa from the Department of Pathological Analysis in the College of Applied Medical Sciences at the University of Karbala.

Assistant Professor Dr. Israa Nasser Ghulam, lecturer from the Department of Life Sciences, published a scientific study titled “Cobalt and Lead Toxicity on the Tubifex plant: A study on the lethal effect and changes in antioxidants.” The study was published in the journal Natural and Engineering Sciences, classified in Scopus Q3
The study aimed to evaluate the lethal and sublethal toxic effects of the heavy metals cobalt (Co) and lead (Pb) on the oligochaetes (Tubifex tubifex), a key environmental indicator. Experiments indicated that the median lethal concentration (LC50) was 998.2 mg/L for cobalt and 207.5 mg/L for lead after 48 hours of exposure, demonstrating a higher toxicity for lead than for cobalt. The study also examined the effect of exposure to sub-lethal concentrations (680 mg/L for cobalt and 95 mg/L for lead) over 7 and 14 days. The results showed a significant decrease in antioxidant activity. For cobalt, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity decreased from 98 U/mg on day 7 to 73 U/mg on day 14, while glutathione (GSH) concentration decreased from 20 µg/ml to 13 µg/ml. For lead exposure, superoxide dismutase activity decreased from 95 U/mg on day 7 to 68 U/mg on day 14, and glutathione (GSH) concentration decreased from 18 µg/ml to 8 µg/ml. The study concluded that these findings highlight the pivotal role of antioxidants in combating oxidative stress caused by heavy metals, making them potential biomarkers for monitoring environmental pollution.
