Prof. Dr. Alaa Abdul Hussein Al-Daami published a scientific research paper titled “In Vitro Evaluation of Pomegranate and Hibiscus Extracts Compared to a Commercial Cranberry Product Against Escherichia coli (E. coli) Causing Urinary Tract Infections.”

The research aimed to highlight that urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial diseases worldwide, caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli). The increasing global resistance to antibiotics has prompted researchers to seek alternative treatments.

The study concluded that hibiscus and pomegranate extracts, and a 50:50 mixture of these extracts, combined with a commercial cranberry product, exhibit antibacterial effects against E. coli. Four solvents were used to extract dried pomegranate peel and hibiscus calyces. Agar diffusion was then used to test the products’ bactericidal activity. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum sterile concentration (MBC) were determined for the optimal extraction liquid exhibiting the highest antibacterial activity.

The study found that 70% acidified ethanol was the most effective solvent for extracting the compounds and demonstrated superior antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. The pomegranate extract also exhibited higher antibacterial activity than the corresponding hibiscus extract, with better MIC and MBC values. Combining the two extracts and testing them against the same bacteria resulted in higher activity than the corresponding standard herbal products.

The Department of Biology at the College of Education for Pure Sciences organized a training course entitled “Active Learning Skills.”

This course aims to highlight the importance of active learning skills in developing students’ ability to think critically and analytically, rather than simply memorizing. It increases student interaction and participation, thus fostering a deeper understanding of the material. It also helps develop problem-solving, teamwork, and responsibility skills.

The course covered several topics, including the concept of active learning and its importance. These included defining active learning and its characteristics, explaining its role in transitioning from traditional, rote-learning-based education to participatory learning, and exploring active learning strategies such as cooperative learning, brainstorming, problem-solving, and project-based learning, along with demonstrating how to implement them in the classroom.

The course also covered active learning strategies such as cooperative learning, brainstorming, problem-solving, and project-based learning, along with an explanation of how to implement them in the classroom. The researchers recommended paying attention to such topics in order to adopt active learning strategies in the educational process instead of traditional rote learning methods. They also recommended training teaching staff in the use of active learning methods and developing their skills in this area.

The Dean of the College of Education for Pure Sciences, Prof. Dr. Hamida Aidan Salman, received the Institutional Accreditation Committee from the University of Karbala Presidency to follow up on the requirements for institutional accreditation and to review the progress achieved in its various aspects.

During the meeting, mechanisms for implementing accreditation standards were discussed, and the approved plans for improving academic, administrative, and financial performance were reviewed, along with progress rates in the areas of governance, educational programs, scientific research, and community service.

The meeting also emphasized the importance of integrated efforts between the university administration and the college to ensure that accreditation requirements are met according to national standards.

The Department of Life Sciences held practical seminars for postgraduate/PhD students in the research phase, supervised by Professor Dr. Israa Nasser Ghulam.

The presentation included a detailed overview of student research projects, including a seminar by PhD student Sabah Fadhil entitled “A Study of Aquatic Snail Species in the Al-Husseiniya River/Karbala Governorate as Intermediate Hosts for Digenic Bovines.”

Study of Aquatic Snails in Al-Husseiniya Creek/Karbala Governorate as Intermediate Hosts for Digenic Bovines

This study investigated the presence of German snail species in several streams in Karbala Governorate, central Iraq, including the Al-Husseiniya, Al-Duwaihiya, and Al-Hanidiya streams, as well as the Musay’ida Canal. The study also investigated the presence of larval infestations of digenic trematodes. Four species of Physa acuta, Melanopsis nodosa, and Ferussac snails were observed in the Al-Husseiniya stream: Viviparus bengalensis, Theodoxus Jordani (Sowerby), (Drapmad), and (Lamarck). Snail samples were collected from the Al-Duwaihiya stream. Five species of snails were found in the waters of this site: V. bengalensis, M. nodosa, and Melanoidis tuberculata (Muller). Eight species of trematodes (Lymnaea acuta, Lymnaea auricularia, and Linaeus) were identified and isolated from three of the studied snail species: M. nodosa, M. tuberculata, and L. Lauricularia, at different study sites.

This course aims to introduce students to the principles of biological classification, its importance, and the rules of international nomenclature. The topics covered include morphological, anatomical, and molecular classification, evolutionary relationships, and medical, environmental, and agricultural applications. Targeting life sciences students, the three-day course included lectures and practical activities. By the end of the course, students will be able to understand and apply classification and analyze evolutionary relationships.

The course covered several topics, including an introduction to biological classification, defining the concept and importance of classification in the study of biodiversity, understanding the rules of international nomenclature for living organisms, and recognizing the foundations of scientific nomenclature within international systems.

The researchers recommended focusing on such topics to emphasize the importance of incorporating practical applications into teaching taxonomy to life sciences students, promoting the use of modern molecular techniques for studying evolutionary relationships, and encouraging the establishment of workshops and advanced courses in molecular analysis and the construction of evolutionary trees.

Under the slogan “Ideas Take Flight from the Land of the Two Rivers,” the Physics Department participated in the Entrepreneurship Week held at the College of Administration and Economics. The department’s participation was demonstrated through the presentation of innovative scientific activities by its students, reaffirming its active role in supporting scientific endeavors and entrepreneurship, and fostering a culture of innovation among students. This was achieved by exploring entrepreneurial projects and innovative ideas, and engaging with scientific activities and workshops that addressed mechanisms for transforming research ideas into applied projects that serve the community.

This participation reflects the Physics Department’s commitment to supporting student talent and developing their scientific and research skills, thereby contributing to the preparation of a generation capable of translating scientific knowledge into practical applications that serve society and contribute to achieving sustainable development.

Through this participation, the Physics Department affirms its continued support for scientific activities and its commitment to strengthening its presence in university forums that contribute to raising the scientific and research level of its students.

A Review: The Impact of Viral Mutations on the Transmission Dynamics of the Monkeypox Virus

The research aimed to study the Monkeypox Virus (MPXV), an emerging zoonotic pathogen belonging to the poxvirus genus, found primarily in Central and West Africa. This virus is similar to the smallpox virus, which causes smallpox, and causes symptoms such as fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes.

The study concluded that the virus spreads through direct contact with infected animals or people, or through contaminated surfaces. The recent increase in monkeypox cases outside its usual range has raised global health concerns. Understanding its epidemiology, clinical symptoms, and transmission is crucial for effective prevention and control.

This study concluded that understanding the impact of viral mutations on monkeypox is critical for developing effective surveillance, prevention, and treatment strategies. This analysis underscores the importance of ongoing genomic surveillance to anticipate changes in monkeypox epidemiology and adapt public health responses accordingly.

In line with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research’s policy of enhancing responsiveness to quality requirements, developing the educational environment, and measuring institutional performance indicators, our college’s departments have achieved advanced rankings in the national classification. The Mathematics Department at the College of Education for Pure Sciences secured first place, while the Chemistry Department came in second, and the Physics Department ranked third in the national classification results. This outstanding academic and institutional achievement reflects a spirit of integrity and dedication to work, and a strong commitment to applying quality standards and academic excellence.

This progress is the fruit of the continuous efforts exerted by the academic departments and their staff, working as a unified team, which contributes to raising the scientific and research level of the college and enhancing its standing in national classifications.

On this occasion, the Dean of the College of Education for Pure Sciences, Professor Dr. Hamida Aidan Salman, extends her sincere thanks and appreciation to all the advanced departments, the national classification committees in the departments, the Director and staff of the Quality Assurance Division at the college, and all those who contributed to achieving this accomplishment.
