Assistant Professor Dr. Israa Nasser Ghulam from the Department of biology published a scientific research paper entitled “A New Record of Brown Lip Snails: Eobania, vermiculata (O. F. Muller, 1774,) Gastropoda: Helicidae in the Gardens of Karbala.” It was published in the journal Machine Learning for Applied Physics, which is classified in Scopus Q2.
The research aimed to document the first scientific record of the presence of the land snail Eobania vermiculata in the gardens of the holy city of Karbala, Iraq, during the period from February to April 2020. Fifty samples were collected from nurseries and the outskirts of the shrine of Imam Hussein, and the morphological characteristics of the shells were documented, including length, width, and opening height. The study found that this species is characterized by shell colors ranging from creamy green to dark brown, with stripes or spots. This species of snail is a known agricultural pest in many regions of the Middle East and the Arabian Peninsula. The study indicates that this snail’s activity increases during the fall and spring seasons. The classification was verified using modern taxonomic sources. This record represents a new addition to the region’s biodiversity and serves as an important reference for studies on biodiversity and pest control.

Assistant Professor Dr. Israa Nasser Ghulam, lecturer from the Department of Life Sciences, published a scientific study titled “Cobalt and Lead Toxicity on the Tubifex plant: A study on the lethal effect and changes in antioxidants.” The study was published in the journal Natural and Engineering Sciences, classified in Scopus Q3
The study aimed to evaluate the lethal and sublethal toxic effects of the heavy metals cobalt (Co) and lead (Pb) on the oligochaetes (Tubifex tubifex), a key environmental indicator. Experiments indicated that the median lethal concentration (LC50) was 998.2 mg/L for cobalt and 207.5 mg/L for lead after 48 hours of exposure, demonstrating a higher toxicity for lead than for cobalt. The study also examined the effect of exposure to sub-lethal concentrations (680 mg/L for cobalt and 95 mg/L for lead) over 7 and 14 days. The results showed a significant decrease in antioxidant activity. For cobalt, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity decreased from 98 U/mg on day 7 to 73 U/mg on day 14, while glutathione (GSH) concentration decreased from 20 µg/ml to 13 µg/ml. For lead exposure, superoxide dismutase activity decreased from 95 U/mg on day 7 to 68 U/mg on day 14, and glutathione (GSH) concentration decreased from 18 µg/ml to 8 µg/ml. The study concluded that these findings highlight the pivotal role of antioxidants in combating oxidative stress caused by heavy metals, making them potential biomarkers for monitoring environmental pollution. The study highlights the urgent need to develop sustainable environmental strategies to reduce the impact of these pollutants on aquatic ecosystems

The Department of biology at the College of Education for Pure Sciences at the University of Karbala discussed a doctoral thesis entitled “Evaluation of the protective role of the aqueous extract of Epimedium grandiflorum on some histological changes in the reproductive system of male albino rats treated with cisplatin.” The thesis was presented by the student (Rasha Fadel Musa), under the supervision of Professor Dr. (Ashwaq Kazim Obaid)
The thesis aimed to evaluate the protective role of the aqueous extract of the horny goat weed plant (Epimedium grandiflorum) against histological and physiological changes in the reproductive system of male albino rats treated with cisplatin (Cp). The thesis also concluded that the aqueous extract of horny goat weed has a protective effect against changes in the tissues of the male reproductive system, its effectiveness as an antioxidant, its ability to reduce free radicals, reduce oxidative stress, protect testicular, epididymal, and prostate tissues from cisplatin-induced toxicity, and improve some functional parameters in male albino rats. The study recommended further research, and we propose conducting a histological and physiological study to test the effectiveness of aqueous extracts of horny goat weed on liver and kidney tissues and other body organs. We also propose isolating the active components of horny goat weed roots and stems and studying their protective effects against the side effects of medicinal drugs. Further studies are also needed to determine the toxic effects of cisplatin on other organs, such as the liver, kidney, and lungs, and its effect on the pituitary gland, adrenal gland, and thyroid gland. The committee proceeded with precision and professionalism, conducting a comprehensive review of the exam papers and verifying the accuracy of the grades collected and the corrections. This ensures fairness to students who have submitted objections in accordance with applicable ministerial regulations and instructions. These procedures are part of a series of steps taken by the college to enhance confidence in the educational and examination process and achieve the principle of academic justice.

The aim of this seminar was to diagnose Cryptosporidium parasites and determine the prevalence of the parasite among people suffering from diarrhea and its relationship to epidemiological factors in Karbala Governorate using various diagnostic methods. Microscopic examination, which includes staining samples with modified acid-base fluorescence (MAF), and molecular testing using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology were used
The results of the study demonstrated the diagnosis of Cryptosporidium parasites using microscopic, immunological, and molecular diagnostic methods in stool samples from patients in Karbala Governorate
The study compared the effectiveness of various immunological techniques and highlighted the importance of immunology in detecting and controlling infection. And studying the relationship between infection with this parasite and some epidemiological factors such as the patient’s gender, age, residential area, and the month in which the sample was taken

The College of Education for Pure Sciences at the University of Kerbala has announced the seating chart for applicants nominated to take the competitive examination for the college’s Master’s and Doctoral programs for the academic year 2025-2026. The competitive examination will be held on Monday, June 30, 2025, at 9:00 AM.
The Deanship of the College of Education for Pure Sciences invites all qualified applicants to arrive half an hour before the start of the competitive examination to find out the location of the examination hall and their seating. They should bring the electronic application form, verified and stamped by the College’s Graduate Studies Division, and the original unified ID card or civil status card.
An interview will be held for candidates immediately after the competitive examination, depending on the location and time of the interview for each study program.
