Discussion of a Master’s Thesis
Department of biology at the College of Education for Pure Sciences / University of Karbala discussed a master’s thesis tagged (a taxonomic study of the genus Portlaka from the Portlake family in Iraq) for the student (Fadila Hassan Alwan), and under the supervision of a professor. Nepal Mutair Al-Karaawi. The aim of the thesis was to study the phenotypic characteristics of the vegetative and flowering parts, study the characteristics of the transverse sections of roots and stems, and study the exact phenotypic characteristics of pollen grains.
The thesis showed the importance of identifying the tissues that make up the leaf, stem and roots and the characteristics of those tissues, the number of their layers, the way they are distributed and their dimensions, which is important in knowing the functions of the tissue because the tissue cells are arranged in a way that suits the function of the tissue. And its dimensions in distinguishing between species. Most of the forms were recorded for the first time for the types of sex. The researcher recommended conducting a molecular study that helps determine the relationships in terms of convergence and divergence between the studied species, and conducting an electron microscope study of all surfaces of the cuticles of leaves and flower parts, which certainly gives accurate taxonomic evidence for the isolation of species, and the study of pollen grains by means of an electron microscope, and conducting chemical studies by means of a microscope. GC-MS to identify the active compounds that also determine the type of relationship between the studied species. The student received an excellence grade.
